Training dogs to stay in his place – Instructions and Tips
Training dogs to stay in his place can be really helpful when you need him to settle down or get out from your feet. By picking a place inside your house, or a separated place in the room, you may train your dog to go to its place when being required. Surprisingly, this command is rather easy to teach your furry friend.
Prepare for Training
Firstly, your dog needs to know how to lie down immediately on demand before being taught about going to its place. You should spend several training lesson working on DOWN signal. Once he can lie down automatically on command, it’s time he is ready to move on to the PLACE lesson.
Secondly, make your decision in advance on the place that you want your pet to come in when you give him command. It is suggested that area rug or a bed will work well. Well, in case you want to use the command in different rooms, just use a portable bed / mat then it is easy to move your pet from room to room.
Importantly, you will need to prepare a handful of treats as rewards or a clicker in case you plan to apply for clicker training.
Choose a Command
Finding and deciding on a word to use for your command. It seems to work best for using one word only. And “Place” is one of the most frequent words to be used, while “bed” and “mat” also work fine.
Lure Your Dog
Let’s start by standing close to a bed/ mat which will serve as your pet’s place. By giving the command “Place”, then you use a treat with an aim to lure your dog onto its spot. Once they are on the mat already, praise him or click the clicker then give him a treat. Just repeat this several times then most dogs will follow your rule after a few short training lessons.
Add the Down
Now when your dog had put all his feet onto the bed/ mat when being commanded, begin requiring him to lie down. You give the command “Place”, then once your dog gets to the bed, give him the command “Down”.
Normally it will take a few minutes for him to comply in the first time, however, he should do that automatically after a few practice sessions. When he completed this task for several times, he should be given treats and your praise when he lies down after you say “Place” command.
Increase the Time
Training dogs to stay in his place is a process that he should practice step by step each day.
Ok, your dog is already lying down onto its bed after being asked “Place”, so now you can increase the time for him to spend there. In order to do this, step by step and slowly add a few seconds before you offer treats to him when he responds correctly to your command. When you see their progress, add small increments of time slowly.
In case your dog makes a mistake or get up from its place before given treat from you, just give him “place” command once again then go back to the last point that your dog did correctly. By adding to the amount of time that your dog stays in its bed, surely you will be able to give the command soon and have your dog stay in his place while you are busy with your work.
Move to Other Rooms
In situations that you expect to use this “Place” command in different rooms, please keep calm and wait till your pet mastered the command in a specific place. After that, move the bed/ mat to another room and do the process again. Otherwise, if you prefer not to move the bed/ mat from room to room, you can pick a spot in every room that will serve as your pet’s spot when you give him “Place” command.
In reality, dogs are intelligent and many of them catch on quickly and follow immediately once you give him the command in a new room. Still, there’re dogs who will need to learn this same behavior should be done in a new room. In case this happen to your pet, just start again from the beginning.
Problems & Proofing Behavior
Most dogs can learn this command quickly after a few training sessions. With several times of training, you should have your dog to be able to find its bed on command. Still, one of the most common mistakes that dog owners make is their inconsistent.
